MEET THE CREATIVE TEAM!

Meet the creative team behind our all-new anthology project, Tales from Nottingham, featuring six short stories based on our best-selling medieval noir! We had the chance to sit down and chat with each contributor about their contributions to the anthology, their inspirations, and more!

Check out our interview with Mad Cave Studios’ 2021 Talent Search winners, Damien Becton and Rafael Romeo Magat!

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Damien: Hey, everyone! Born and raised in Sumter, South Carolina, I’ve been a comic book reader since I was five years old and have been daydreaming and coming up with stories just as long. When I’m not creating comics, I’m an assistant principal at a middle school in Charlotte, North Carolina. You can find me on Instagram – @bectonbectonbecton, Twitter- @damienbecton.

Rafael: Hi! I’m Rafael Romeo Magat, a Filipino illustrator who’s had stories published in WinC Magazine, FutureQuake, Tales from the Quarantine, Jill Trent: Science Sleuth, and Five From Beyond. I’ve also done promotional artwork for the film Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
Most recently and notably, I am one of the winners of the 2021 Mad Cave Studios Talent Search and a part of Tales from Nottingham.
If you’d like to see more of my work, I’m usually on Instagram (@artofrafaelromeomagat) and Behance (behance.net/rafael-romeo-magat).

Q: What is your contribution to Tales of Nottingham?

Damien: I wrote a story called “Secret Origins.” I was tasked with the story of Robin Hood meeting Little John and the inception of the Merry Men by Brian and David and had a ball coming up with everything. Shoutout to Brian and David!

Rafael: I am the cover and interior artist (pencils and inks) for issue 5 where Robin meets Little John for the first time.

Q: Which Nottingham character would you say you resonate with the most?

Damien: A little biased but I’m a huge fan of Little John! He’s physically imposing and intimidating but also not blindly loyal to one person. You can reason with the guy.

Rafael: Lady Marian! She’s tons of fun. I love how cunning she is.

Q: What does your creative process look like, and where do you draw inspiration from?

Damien: When I conceptualize a story, I initially try to find a motivation that I can connect with to a character. For example, when I wrote Robin in this issue, I realized I didn’t have anything particularly in common with him. I’m not a zealot or not remotely as ruthless as he is, but I had to find a way to connect to him. I had to equate his passion for England and Richard to something in my life that I would do anything for. Then when I figure out motivations, I start building out how the story unfolds and cool ways show those motivations.

But I draw inspiration from many places including video games like Final Fantasy, God of War, and The Last of Us to other creators like Brian Hawkins, David Hazan, Jarred Lujan, Rachel Distler, Kenneth Laster, Akira Brown and so many others.

Rafael: Well the first step is reading the script and talking with the writer, in this case it’s the absolutely wonderful Damien Becton. Me and Damien hashed out the pacing of the story before he made his first draft. He’s a great collaborator and he was always open to adding or combining panels to help tell the story better; I’m especially grateful for the trust he gave me when it came to the action scenes!
After reading the script, I do research and gather reference. I then practice drawing the characters to familiarize myself with their designs, like with Robin below.

Soon after I start making my thumbnails. I doodle in the margins of the script, trying out all the compositions I think of and putting them together. This is the part that requires the most intense creativity and thought. When I make my thumbnails I always try to treat the panels like musical notes with them all forming a kind of beat that the reader can feel in their head. When I’m happy with what I’ve got I take reference pictures and make the final thumbnail sketches. Let’s take a look at Page 6 from thumbnail to final inks.
After the thumbnails are approved, I scan them in, blow them up to Legal size (8.5 x 13 in), print them in blue and pencil right on top. The panel borders are added in Photoshop so that they’re always straight.
Since I draw on top of the thumbnail, I don’t need to start from scratch when I pencil. Saves me a TON of time. Once the pencils are done, I scan those in, blow them up to Tabloid size (11 x 17 in), print them in blue and ink right on top. I usually change some minor things between pencils and inks. When I’m done I scan them all in, clean it up in Photoshop and send them in for approval from my editor who forwards the inks to the color artist and letterer.

The last step in my creative process is hoping that the audience likes it ☺

Q: As a winner of Mad Cave Studios’ annual Talent Search, do you have any advice for aspiring creatives?

Damien: Regarding the Talent Search itself, don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Cliche, I know, but it’s true! I was able to read all of the 2021 Mad Cave Talent Search-winning writers scripts and all of us had incredibly different stories. I don’t think Mad Cave is looking for any one type of story, as long as it’s well-written, structured, and engaging. And be sure to follow their guidelines!

For just creating, it’s definitely scary to put yourself out there, but for me the hardest part was taking the first step. If you have the resources and time, I say just go for it and pursue those creative dreams. It’s a good feeling when you finally start seeing your script start to become fully inked, colored, and lettered pages.

Rafael: Try to wake up early and sleep 7 hours. Your body will thank you.

Q: Any projects or events on the horizon that we should be looking out for?

Damien: I do! I have several projects coming out in 2023 actually! I have Worlds Away #1-4, my creator-owned series, coming out on Kickstarter in early 2023 and being published with Band of Bards Comics, Remember, an original graphic novel, scripted by me and story by Patrick Foreman of Black Cotton, coming in 2023, another creator-owned horror comic with artist Kenneth Laster called Try Not to Die coming in mid-2023, and another top-secret comic series coming from a top-secret publisher that will I will hopefully be able to share soon! Cross your fingers for me, everyone!

Rafael: Aside from Tales from Nottingham, I have a few short stories coming out next year which I’ll announce on my Insta. I also took over as artist for Issue 2 of the miniseries Parallel P.D., written by Alberto Veloso, and that’ll be coming out next year too.
