David Galiano: Savage Bastards Creator Spotlight

Get to Know the Savage Writer Behind a Modern Love Letter to the Wild West.

We are very excited to bring you a series of Creator Spotlight articles that focus on our new title, Savage Bastards; A story about brotherhood, revenge, and betrayal set in the wild west. Today, Chris Sanchez was joined by series writer, David Galiano, to discuss a little about winning Mad Cave’s talent search and what went into the process of writing Savage Bastards.

INFLUENCES AND EXPERIENCE

Chris Sanchez: Hello, David, thanks for taking the time to join us on our Creator Spotlight. I’m really excited to talk about your first series. First things first, where are you from?

David Galiano: Thank you, Chris. I’m from Palm Bay, Florida, about an hour and a half from Orlando.

CS: Nice! I went to school in Orlando. So, how old were you when you first started getting into comics? Do you remember your first one?

DG: I was about eight or nine. My first comic was an X-Men comic by Claremont and I loved it! My dad bought it for me because, at the time, I was not a big fan of reading. My dad wanted me to develop a love for it. He felt it was important.

CS: Can’t go wrong with Claremont. This leads me to my next question, who are some of your biggest influences?

DG: It’s funny, when I used to dream about working in comics, I thought it would be as an artist. I used to idolize Jim Lee and McFarlane. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that I really started paying attention to the writers of my favorite books. When I started writing, I feel like I took a lot of inspiration from Johns, Bendis, Gaiman, Simone, and Rucka; writers who tend to focus on dialogue and character growth.

CS: Those are definitely writers worth taking inspiration from. How has your experience as one of Mad Cave’s First Talent Search Winners been?

DG: The whole process has been nothing but positive. The team has been very supportive. Gio, my editor, is fantastic! She has kept me on track and focused. I’ve made some lifelong friends amongst the other contest winners as well. I’m happy to be a part of the Mad Cave family.

CS: Own up to one of your guilty pleasures.
DG: Well… I absolutely love listening to podcasts about cryptids, urban legends, and creepy pastas. It drives my son crazy when we’re in the car.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

CS: Tell me a little bit about how you approached this story. Did the characters come first or was it the plot?

DG: The plot came first with this book. When Mad Cave told me the IP was called Savage Bastards, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be interesting if they were actually bastards, kids whose parents were not married when they were conceived?”
CS: That does sound cool. Now, for you, what is the best part of writing a comic book?

DG: The best part for me is the beginning, when you’re just starting to develop the idea and plot for the story. At the beginning, everything and anything is possible. You’re not locked into anything yet.

CS: And what is the worst part of writing a comic book?

DG: Sometimes, just finding the time. Like a lot of creators, I have a full-time job, a family, and other commitments. It can be hard to find the time to sit down and be in the proper frame of mind to create. That being said, it’s no excuse. All of your favorite creators had the same struggles or worse, and yet they still did it. I have to remind myself of that sometimes.

CS: Finally, what can fans expect from the rest of this series?

DG: A fun and exciting adventure through the American west with a few twists and turns, as well as some interesting characters.
