Brian Hawkins

Sit down with Virginia-based editor and writer Brian Hawkins as we discuss what the Lower Your Sights project means to him, his contribution to the anthology, and his thoughts on the unifying power of art.

Q: What does this project mean to you?
Brian: Working on this project is an honor – on a professional level, it is my first time writing anything for Mad Cave Studios. I’ve been an editor with the company for several years and to be given the chance to contribute to this anthology as a writer definitely means a lot. But beyond that, it is the purpose of this anthology that speaks the most to me. To write a story that is to highlight a part of our world that is often overlooked: how war ravages life in so many horribly various ways, and how human beings just like me must deal with the aftermath of such onslaught… It’s meant to be impactful, hopefully to the reader but already to me as the writer. Everything starts with awareness and then there’s the opportunity for action. I’m grateful to be a part of the process that starts to bring awareness.

Q: What is your contribution to Lower Your Sights? (Short Story, Pinup, Etc.)
Brian: I am the writer/co-creator for the short story Invisible Child with artist/co-creator Ignacio Di Meglio.

Q: In addition to supplying food and essential supplies, Voices of Children also provides art therapy to help kids cope and overcome the stress, anxiety, and trauma of living in war conditions. Do you believe art has the power to heal?
Brian: I wholeheartedly believe that art has the power to heal. Art is intrinsic to the human condition, and it is a way for us to truly come to know ourselves and others.
