Our Soot Stained Heart Receives Two Wins With Hassan Ostmane-Elhaou’s Eisner Award for Best Lettering & Stipan Morian’s Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award
Mad Cave Studios is proud to announce that Our Soot Stained Heart, as Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou has won the 2026 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best Lettering, and artist Stipan Morian has been named the recipient of the 2026 Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award.
The dual recognition caps off a standout year for the publisher, which received nominations across four Eisner Award categories. Temporal by Stephanie Williams and Asiah Fulmore earned a Best New Series, with Williams also receiving a shared Best Writer nomination for her work on the series. Dick Tracy contributed to Francesco Francavilla’s shared Best Cover Artist nomination.
The Coalition is a city of wonder in the deep north, but it is ruled by the cruel Governor Glass and his factory lords. Coal is the lifeline of the city, and for honest workers like young Peggy Stones, life can be hard because of the nefarious quota. To get extra coal at the end of the year, you must be bad every day! Peggy’s life is thrown into chaos when she is imprisoned and sent into exile, which begins a harrowing journey to the ends of the world to find answers that could change the world!
This marks Mad Cave Studios’ second Russ Manning Award, following Oliver Bly’s win for The Mushroom Knight in 2024, and the publisher’s second honor presented during the Eisner Awards ceremony, after receiving the prestigious Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award in 2025 for L.A. Strong: A Charity Comic for Victims of the Los Angeles Fires.
