Maverick Summer Reading Challenge!

We’re kicking off this summer with a splash! Maverick’s first-ever Summer Reading Challenge is here! For every week between July 14th and August 25th, we’ll be reading a different graphic novel from the Maverick imprint, starting with Needle & Thread, and wrapping up with the release of our newest original graphic novel, In The Shadow of the Throne.

At the end of each week, we’ll be checking in on your progress and adding to the fun with activities such as designing your own cosplay, baking cookies, making origami swords, and more! Looking to get a head start? You can download our official reading journals here.

The challenge kicks off on July 14th, starting with our first-ever Maverick Title, Needle & Thread, by David Pinckney & Ennun Ana Iurov!

NEEDLE & THREAD
Writer: David Pinckney – Artist: Ennun Ana Iurov – Letterer: Micah Myers

Synopsis: Choosing between living the life you want and living the life you’re “supposed to have” is not always an easy choice. Noah, embracing his true-self, wants to pursue a career in costume design, something his loving, public service parents would never approve of. Azarie, the perfect, model daughter of a very stern, traditional family, dreams of embracing the hobbies she secretly loves, hobbies her social circle would never abide by. The two live different lives and their social statuses keep them from ever crossing paths until they have a chance encounter that exposes some common ground: the desire to be who they truly are. Together, the two set out to put it all on the line and show everyone what they’re made of and what they want to achieve in the form of cosplay. Their growing friendship will be tested and their faith in themselves, as well as each other, will be tried.

On July 21st, the challenge continues with our spooky, Nightmare in Savannah, by Lela Gwenn and Rowan MacColl!

But after a night in the woods, a power has awakened within them, a power that’s equal parts magical and terrifying. But there are no coincidences in Savannah, and once they find out how to control their powers the town is in for a rude awakening.

On July 28th, we’re kicking things up a notch with our action-packed soccer graphic novel, World Class, by Jay Sandlin and Patrick Mulholland!

His enrollment hits a snag upon meeting the team’s star striker, Titan Evans. Titan is everything Adrian is not; rich, powerful, connected, and with a hunger to dominate the school as well as the pitch. The constant fighting, teasing, and bullying, brings about crippling anxiety of losing his spot on the team. That’s until Luciano DeSilva takes him under his wing, and gives Adrian the confidence to be himself and value his position on the team.
