Kateryna Kosheleva

Sit down with Ukrainian artist Kateryna Kosheleva as we discuss what the Lower Your Sights project means to her, her contribution to the anthology, and her thoughts on the unifying power of art.

Q: What does this project mean to you?
Kateryna: With the war raging in Ukraine, my home country, it’s difficult to make art about
anything else, and this project was an excellent way of telling a story of the people living through it, discovering the heroes in themselves and those around them, re-
learning simple truths that seem to have been forgotten, coming together.

Q: What is your contribution to Lower Your Sights? (Short Story, Pinup, Etc.)
Kateryna: Short story — illustration.

Q: In addition to supplying food and essential supplies, Voices of Children also provides art therapy to help kids cope and overcome the stress, anxiety, and trauma of living in war conditions. Do you believe art has the power to heal?
Kateryna: Any healing starts with defining a problem. In that sense, I think, art is uniquely suited to help a person lay it all out in front of themselves — their pain, their fears, their
trauma, and do so in a very honest way.

A Note From Kateryna

I’m a Ukrainian artist working predominantly in digital media. My form of choice lies at the intersection of literature and visual arts — graphic novels.
Born and raised in Ukraine, and currently residing in Poland, I draw a lot of inspiration from
authentic folk art of Eastern Europe, as well as complicated historic processes that
influenced it.
