MAD CAVE STUDIOS’ GATCHAMAN UNIVERSE BEGINS WITH FREE COMIC BOOK DAY
On Free Comic Book Day (Saturday, May 5th), our GATCHAMAN #0 issue will introduce your store customers to Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, the five-member, bird-themed superhero team and stars of the iconic Japanese animated franchise. Furthermore, this Free Comic Book Day special serves as the perfect introduction to our upcoming GATCHAMAN family of titles.
GATCHAMAN #0 includes three stories:
- “Episode Zero” by Cullen Bunn (Deadpool) and Chris Batista (Booster Gold)
- “Inner Compass” by Tommy Lee Edwards (Mother Panic) and Daniel Hansen
- “The Rival” by Steve Orlando (Justice League) and Kath Lobo (The Vampire Slayer)
Each individual story from the FCBD issue gives readers a taste for a different upcoming project scheduled for 2024. We will have three GATCHAMAN titles: an ongoing core series, a series of one-shots focusing on solo missions, and a miniseries focusing on villains.

Each of the above GATCHAMAN titles is a self-contained story with easy entry points. For example, a fan can enjoy GATCHAMAN: GALACTOR #1 without having read the ongoing series, and will feel satisfied that they have read a complete story.
We believe our GATCHAMAN program is “worldbuilding done right,” with each series able to stand on its own while simultaneously contributing to a larger universe, all under the collaborative guidance and singular vision of impassioned creators.
GATCHAMAN ONGOING SERIES DEBUTING WITH ISSUE #1 IN JUNE 2024
The first issue of the ongoing GATCHAMAN comic series by Cullen Bunn and Chris Batista will hit stores on June 26th (with FOC deadlines set for May 26th/27th from Lunar/Diamond, respectively).
Issues #1-5 comprise the first complete storyline, with a consistent cover program across all issues that entails:
- Cover A from artist Inaki Miranda
- Cover B connecting covers from Sanford Greene
- 10-Copy Retailer Incentive from Francine Delgado
HOWEVER, to launch our debut issue in a BIG WAY, Mad Cave is offering six (6) spectacular #1 cover variants to the Direct Market, shown below.
While GATCHAMAN #1 is featured in Diamond and Lunar’s April catalogs, the subsequent GATCHAMAN #2 will next appear in the June catalogs. This solicitation schedule will grant our comic shop partners the ability to evaluate issue #1’s actual sales momentum in their stores in early July, weeks before the FOC deadline for issue #2. The series will then ship monthly for the remainder of the year.
THE ONE-SHOT SPECIALS, SHIPPING BIANNUALLY, BEGIN WITH GATCHAMAN—KEN: DEATHMATCH IN JUNE 2024
The first GATCHAMAN one-shot special will be GATCHAMAN—KEN: DEATHMATCH, written by Tommy Lee Edwards and featuring artwork by Mindy Lee (Harley Quinn). In this issue, Ken the Eagle goes deep undercover to infiltrate a Galactor training program, where washouts are hunted for sport!
The KEN: DEATHMATCH one-shot will hit stores on June 26th (with FOC deadlines set for May 26th/27th from Lunar/Diamond, respectively). Please note that this is the same release date as issue #1 of the ongoing series, creating a great opportunity to cross-sell titles to your customers on the launch day.
