Andriy Lukin
Sit down with Ukrainian creator and graphic designer Andriy Lukin as we discuss what the Lower Your Sights project means to him, his contribution to the anthology, and his thoughts on the unifying power of art.
Q: What does this project mean to you?
Andriy: I’ve heard the story of Sem’s mom long before Lower Your Sights was announced. Her story is painfully close to what many other Ukrainians are going through since the start of the russian full-scale invasion. I myself experienced living in an encircled city under constant airstrikes and shootings — safe to say that scarred me for life. So with “Certainty” I hope the readers will see the toll this war takes on us and learn from our experiences.
Q: What is your contribution to Lower Your Sights? (Short Story, Pinup, Etc.)
Andriy: Lettering.
Q: In addition to supplying food and essential supplies, Voices of Children also provides art therapy to help kids cope and overcome the stress, anxiety, and trauma of living in war conditions. Do you believe art has the power to heal?
Andriy: A lot of Ukrainian kids were stuck in bomb shelters, so singing songs, painting pictures and such, helped them to take their mind off the horrifying situation they were in. So I’m certain that art therapy works, although I doubt that it has the capacity to heal every trauma. Some of our children went through unthinkable hell and will require years of extensive psychiatric help, I’m afraid.
