Long ago, a warrior saved a tiger from death. The Grand Tiger pledged loyalty to the warrior and his small village in return, claiming the people as his own, and gifting them with his kind’s protection, along with powers and divine visions… The Grand Tiger once warned, however, if there were ever twins born into the warrior’s family, they would, upon coming of age, battle to determine who would take the throne in order to bring forth a newer, better world.
“A trial of mind, to test their wisdom and clarity.
A trial of spirit, to test their connection to our ancestors and traditions.
And a trial of body, to test their ferocity, and ultimate power.”
-King Oleandra

Olivia Stephens is a graphic novelist, illustrator, and writer from the Pacific Northwest. She earned her BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2017. Olivia has created work for a number of sites and publications, including The New York Times, The Guardian, and FIYAH Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction. “THE TIGER’S TONGUE is a story that deals with power and the friction that can occur between the personal and political pieces in one’s life. My hope is that it reaches those who need it most: those of us who are frustrated, angry, and scared—but who still get up to fight. This is also my first time writing a story that I’m not illustrating, and I could not be happier to have the immense creative talents of Diansakhu, Bex, Odera and Joamette in bringing it to life!”

“It’s been an amazing experience to work on a project like TIGER’S TONGUE. I adored being able to draw Olivia’s story and bring her characters to life. I’m as thrilled to have this story published as I was when drawing it. I hope my interpretation of Olivia’s vision achieves what we set out to do!”
